Hawaiian Beach Rental's Vacation Rental Business Remains Strong Despite Swine Flu Decimating Hawaii's Japanese Tourism
Honolulu, Hawaii (PRWEB) June 5, 2009 -- As Hawaii visitor numbers declined, the HVCB concluded that Japan tourism was the lone bright spot, increasing 8.8% in April over the same time last year. But weeks after the first swine flu cases in Hawaii this May, the HVBC reported that Japanese visitors numbers dropped sharply, down as much as 37%.
Cases of swine flu in the islands have been mild. State Heath Director Chiyome Fukino said in a recent news release that the effect of the swine flu virus was similar to seasonal flu, and that all of the Hawaiian cases were "recovering at home with no complications."
The decline in Japanese visitors has hit Oahu the hardest where Honolulu hotel occupancy rates, which were already down, have slipped even further. An official for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on May 26 that the H1N1 virus "may have passed its peak" in the United States, even though the number of cases continues to grow.
As of June 1 there were more than 15,000 confirmed swine flu cases worldwide, according to the World Health Organization, with 99 cases causing death. There were 379 confirmed cases of swine flu in Japan, and 10,053 in the United States including 82 in Hawaii.
